June Cable

June Cable introduces herself as a Canadian writer, a spinner of stories set in Canada. She finds this work is a constant challenge, a delightful fascination, a joy.

In the past she has been a nurse, a columnist and a marriage counselor. Current roles include writer, wife, mother, grandmother, friend and, of course, Story Spinner. "Stories keep the roles of my life together weaving threads back and forth, providing the warp and woof of endless tales."

She describes her storytelling as having a life of its own - it just seems to happen. Phone calls and emails come in asking her to various events. She feels that her storytelling is established and belonging to the National Storytellers of Canada provides some contacts. She has produced two CDs that are available through Museum and Tourist stores, "Tales of Gold and Silver" and "Ghost Ship Tales from the Pacific Coast of Canada." She has given numerous workshops on writing and storytelling.

The storytelling and writing are melded into June’s life and work. To her, the heart of writing is "the story" and even when she was writing columns, she still managed to write as a story. An example of this is when she started out writing a column called "Metric Cooking" and the column ended up by being called "Yukon Food and Folklore."

She claims to have always told stories, ever since she was very young. So, she found it a pleasant surprise when she found out that she could be a storyteller and it had a place in society. An example of how June approaches work in this area came last year when she was asked to tell stories at the Whale Festival in Tofino. She then wrote stories about whales to use in her presentations. A young boy listening asked her if she had any stories about the blue whale. June’s presentation had stories about grey whales, orca whales but not the blue whale. So, when she returned home, she created a story about Bernard, the blue whale.

Current projects include a novel about 5 women who have breast cancer and a series of creative non-fiction about sea lions. She describes this series as letting her tell a story about something based on the facts. At the same time, because Bernard is non-fiction, facts are shown as sidebars on each page of the story. This coming year will find June continuing to work on her novel and sea lion series as well as telling stories at various events and venues.
