Flora Scott
Flora Scott, who recently completed her first C.D. is a jazz guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. She has studied jazz guitar for the past several years receiving instruction at jazz workshops from Oliver Gagnon, Seattle guitarist Brian Nova and takes lessons regularly from Victoria jazz guitarist Rob Cheramy. She began playing the guitar and singing at the age of seven and has also studied voice in the past, the most recent being at a vocal jazz workshop receiving instruction from Seattle vocalist Jay Clayton and occasional lessons from Jay following that.

She performed in a jazz Big Band with Slide Hampton and Ian McDougal during Hugh Frasers Big Band Workshop and plays guitar in the Don Leppard Big Band. Other performances include playing regularly around Victoria at clubs and restaurants with her trio or quartet and occasionally with a septet or octet.

Her style is unique and brings to life jazz standards and some of the more obscure jazz tunes. Some influences include Sarah Vaughn, Chet Baker, Mose Allison, Billie Holiday, Kenny Burrel, Joe Pass, Jimmy Bruno and Django Reinhart. She has recently completed a C.D. called 'Then and Now' with Hugh Fraser and the members of his quintet which also features Vancouver trumpeter Brad Turner. The tunes include a few up-beat swing tunes, some bossas and beguine rhythms as well as ballads and fast numbers resulting in a variety of melodies and rhythms. The tunes, some of them written as far back as the thirties, cover the last seven decades of jazz with the most recent one having been composed this year by Flora Scott.

Flora Scott
Then and Now

CD (March 1, 1999)
Original Release Date: March 1, 1999
'Then & Now' represents the span of time over which these tunes were composed. Some were written in the 1920's, 30's, 40's and 50's including an original song "Stay" by Flora herself.
Flora selected these tunes to record because she found the older jazz melodies particularly appealing while at the same time the lyrics are still effective and meaningful by today's standards.
Featuring Hugh Fraser and produced by Claire Lawrence with arrangements by Anita Bonkowski. Also appearing: Campbell Ryga, Ross Taggart, Brad Turner, Ken Lister, Dave Robbins, and Craig Scott.
