Qaid-i-azam
Atari Cluster

Super rare private press/independent debut (and only) CD by great westcoast Canadian art/prog rock trio, Qaid-I-Azam from Victoria. A heavy King Crimson meets Nomeansno kind of sound with great guitar effects, incredible bass playing, synth, and percussion with chimes and gongs!

Features Jeremy Turner from Stick Farm and Xipperstein. Turner is now a curator for a major art gallery in Vancouver, and is also known for his printed articles on concrete music composers such as John Dolden. This CD was only sold locally, and never distributed outside of Ontario. Very rare and out of print, hard to find!

Rick Bateman
Island Love Songs

Soft & Romantic - From Canada's West Coast
Island Love Songs is the work of Vancouver Island singer/songwriter Rick Bateman. The twelve romantic songs on the CD flow easily between celtic arrangements, folk ballads and soft, latin rhythms.

All of these songs are from the heart, inspired over the years from the romance and adventure of life on the islands, and each has its own story. "A Scottish Waltz" was conceived during a visit of Scotland's Fochaber Fiddlers to Victoria. The mountain referred to in "Island Love Song" is Mt. Baker in Bellingham Washington.

Our autumn mists are evocative of days past. "Captain Of The Guard", part of a series of "Castle Songs" found on this and future CD's, expresses a relationships early feelings of desire and protection.

Each of these songs captures the picture of a moment in a relationship - beginnings, celebrations, and memories.

Royal Grand Prix
High Performance

CD (October 13, 1998)

Very Rare and Out of Print

The hilarous project featuring former members of Roots RoundUp, Hard Rock Miners, Show Business Giants, and many more great local Vancouver bands, doin rocking songs about their three favorite things -beer, cars and girls!

If Frank Zappa and the Beastie Boys had somehow been constrained by the musical ambitions and abilities of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, they might have made music that sounds something like Royal Grand Prix. Hailing from Vancouver, the "brothers" Romoli (vocalist Rocky, guitarist Robbie, bassist Rosie, and drummer Mac) dropped High Performance -- their debut collection of smart-ass punk rock -- in 1998 for Wrong Records. Upbeat and simple (both conceptually and musically) High Performance fails to get any big laughs, but Royal Grand Prix does exude a colorful (if somewhat forced) personality on the record that, while dopey, has some charm as well. Double entendre on tracks like "Full Service" abound, and while it's all delivered with unbridled enthusiasm, the tired material prevents Royal Grand Prix from firing on all cylinders. Choice cuts like "She Says" and "Do or Die" have a nice punk energy, and a few clever lines delivered with enough raw power to make any stripped-down hard-edged rock & roll throwback jealous. Listeners who crave muscle-car referenced, filling station goof rock with a punk edge might enjoy High Performance. As for everyone else, well, let's just say they might find that Royal Grand Prix simply lacks octane. ~ Vincent Jeffries, All Music Guide

Sheila Ryan
Samrad Linn

Born in Limerick, Ireland, Sheila Ryan is from a very musical family. Growing up to the sounds of Irish music & dance, she developed her wonderful voice. Singing with her father as they worked their family farm, she learned to appreciate the great traditional Celtic heritage. As a teenager, Sheila played in folk groups, with a country band, & toured with a variety show in Ireland. This experience taught Sheila to enjoy working with the public and brought out her ready wit. Sheila has performed on radio and television in Ireland & Britain.

Sheila plays Irish Harp & Guitar, and since coming to Canada she has written & performed in BC, Alberta & the Yukon in concerts & lounge acts.

Special Guests, The
Everybody Rock

At eight songs in approximately 25 minutes (including a cover of Tommy Roe's "Sweet Pea"), Victoria's Special Guests drop by, make friends and don't overstay their welcome. Their sound is reminiscent of the poppier side of Redd Kross ("3rd Street" would make a perfect bonus track on Third Eye) with a bit of fellow British Columbians Zumpano thrown in to warm things up. Everybody Rock has a classic AM-radio feel, as bouncy numbers like "Halfway There" and "Everybody Rock" segue into sappy (in the best possible sense) ballads like "I Fall."

Sue Doman
Wish You Were Here

An exciting live album from Canadian vocalist SUE DOMAN. Here she sings ten classic tunes from the Big Band era backed by a swingin' ten-piece band.

With an amazing three-octave vocal range and a style that's been compared to Rosemary Clooney, Ella Fitzgerald and Susannah McCorkle, SUE DOMAN will definitely capture your interest! Combined with these classic big band arrangements, this disc is a sure-fire winner!!

Sue Klassen
Follow A Star

Sue Klassen's long-awaited debut CD, Follow A Star, is an all-new celebration of love and the spirit of Christmas! Released in November of 2000, Follow A Star features the original music of Milton Carman with lyrics by Garnett Betts and
Alex Barris. Performed in Sue Klassen's unmistakable vocal style backed by a solid combo and top-notch soloists, these uniquely jazzy, sophisticated tunes run the gamut from earthy to ethereal, making all the stops along the way

Robert Moyes, Monday Magazine, December 14-20, 2000:

  • "... And ending on a happy -- and local! -- note, we have a fine album by Victoria singer Sue Klassen, Follow A Star (MAPL). With a subtitle like Songs Of Love And Christmas-Time, you know it's not a purely Xmas record, but you'd have to be a grinch not to embrace this charming mood-brightener. The opera-trained Klassen sings here in a cabaret manner reminiscent of Rosemary Clooney or Susannah McCorkle, her confident voice framed by a supple jazz trio sometimes augmented by Spanish guitar, violin or flugelhorn. The songs, all composed by Milton Carman, are witty and sophisticated."
