The first sound Pauline Le Bel remembers hearing is her mother playing a Gershwin tune on the piano. Born in a small francophone community in southern Ontario, she learned to sing the popular songs of the day in both French and English. After receiving a Bachelor of Music Degree in Voice and Piano from the University of Alberta (1975), she performed in theatres across Canada, singing principal roles in Godspell; Threepenny Opera; The Bear; Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, and Piaf; Her Songs, Her Loves.

Voices in the Sound Love Songs to Bowen Island

Voices in the Sound - Pauline's mytho-poetic play, a cosmological musical tale about Bowen Island, received standing ovations in all three performances last July 2005. This celebration of the island's natural and human wonders sings of the dreamers that shaped this island in the Salish Sea. The play will be performed again July 7,8, and 9 in the meadow at Crippen Park, Bowen Island.

In 2005, Pauline created and organized a 3-day festival to relive the magic of Bowen Island's history, to deepen our connection to the land and to each other. Hundreds of islanders and visitors walked the land, churned old-fashioned ice cream at the Union Steamship Picnic, tapped their toes to a new musical about Bowen, feasted on wild salmon, and marched in the Bull Kelp Orchestra Parade. This lively community festival brought together local artists, musicians, actors, historians, naturalists, storytellers and businesses to honour the past and dream the future of this island in the Salish Sea.

Pauline Le Bel Dancing With The Crone

In 1999, Pauline released a CD of her own songs. Dancing with the Crone, honors the archetype of the Wise Old Woman.
This tapestry of world beat, celtic and gypsy music, and African chant, features Corbin Keep on cello, and Joseph "Pepe" Danza on percussion. It has been described as "haunting," "soothing," "jarring," "theatrical," and "mystical."

Many of the songs from the CD appear in Pauline's one-woman show, When the Grandmothers Speak, a weaving of song, poetry, dance and improvisation which portrays old age not as a failure, but as a ripening juicy, wise, and prophetic time for women and men.
