Pauline Le Bel
"Le Bel's voice is passionate and expressive,
and her lyrics express a dark, antic wit and clarity.
Don't miss the opportunity to see this dynamic performer and hear these songs."
... Calgary Straight, March 30, 2000

The first sound Pauline Le Bel remembers hearing is her mother playing a Gershwin tune on the piano. Born in a small francophone community in southern Ontario, she learned to sing the popular songs of the day in both French and English. After receiving a Bachelor of Music Degree in Voice and Piano from the University of Alberta (1975), she performed in theatres across Canada, singing principal roles in Godspell; Threepenny Opera; The Bear; Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, and Piaf; Her Songs, Her Loves.

Voices in the Sound Love Songs to Bowen Island

from the musical by Pauline Le Bel

Voices in the Sound - Pauline's mytho-poetic play, a cosmological musical tale about Bowen Island, received standing ovations in all three performances last July 2005. This celebration of the island's natural and human wonders sings of the dreamers that shaped this island in the Salish Sea. The play will be performed again July 7,8, and 9 in the meadow at Crippen Park, Bowen Island.

Reviewers called the play: "Magical, entertaining, and very moving" "An amazing job of spinning the threads of history, humanity, spirit and nature … fun and funny too."

In 2005, Pauline created and organized a 3-day festival to relive the magic of Bowen Island's history, to deepen our connection to the land and to each other. Hundreds of islanders and visitors walked the land, churned old-fashioned ice cream at the Union Steamship Picnic, tapped their toes to a new musical about Bowen, feasted on wild salmon, and marched in the Bull Kelp Orchestra Parade. This lively community festival brought together local artists, musicians, actors, historians, naturalists, storytellers and businesses to honour the past and dream the future of this island in the Salish Sea.

Pauline Le Bel La Tendresse

Pauline's vocal improvisations invoke a deep, earthy, female wisdom, and her evenings of French music with pianist, Michael Creber, continue to enchant both anglophone and francophone listeners.

Pauline Le Bel took the west coast by storm with her critically
acclaimed, passionate portrayal of French chanteuse, Edith Piaf, at
Vancouver's City Stage, a role she recreated at The Belfry (Victoria)
The Grand (London) The Centaur (Montreal) and elsewhere.

La tendresse features the songs of Jacques Brel, Edith Piaf, Felix
Leclerc as well as 3 original songs by Pauline

"Very intimate...a truly listenable CD, a treat." Ed Wolk, Producer, CBC

Pauline Le Bel Dancing With The Crone

In 1999, Pauline released a CD of her own songs. Dancing with the Crone, honors the archetype of the Wise Old Woman.
This tapestry of world beat, celtic and gypsy music, and African chant, features Corbin Keep on cello, and Joseph "Pepe" Danza on percussion. It has been described as "haunting," "soothing," "jarring," "theatrical," and "mystical."

Many of the songs from the CD appear in Pauline's one-woman show, When the Grandmothers Speak, a weaving of song, poetry, dance and improvisation which portrays old age not as a failure, but as a ripening juicy, wise, and prophetic time for women and men.

CD Reviews:
"This is the finest goddess music CD of the year ... the perfect album to listen to by candlelight on a rainy evening. Each song wraps us up in a warm blanket of dark, compassionate Crone energy and wisdom."
... The Beltane Papers, Spring 2002

"This unique album is stark and unexpected, like the elements on Bowen Island off the coast of Canada, where it was conceived. Pauline has a dramatic voice, alternately rich and full, or as old and mysterious as the mountains. Accompanied by cello and some hand percussion, the sound is simple, but weaves a web as complex as the Crone herself. Musically, Dancing With the Crone falls somewhere between spoken/sung poetry, chant, prayer, and ballad. With unerring vocals and skilled accompaniment, this is a one of a kind, and highly recommended for all seekers on the path of the Crone."
